Top ten Bittorrent tricks

bittorrent-head.png
BitTorrent is the go-to resource for downloading everything from music and movies to software and operating systems, but as its popularity continues to grow, so do the number of tools available for making the most of it. Some are must-haves, while others are a waste of time. Climb aboard for a look at 10 of the best BitTorrent utilities, tools, and resources for finding and managing your BitTorrent downloads quickly and efficiently.

10. Use BitTorrent to Send Files

Of course BitTorrent is a great place to go looking for files, but you can actually take advantage of BitTorrent's distributed download protocol to share your own files. This guide details how to create your own torrent to distribute a file on your computer. The guide covers creating the torrent with the popular, Windows-only uTorrent, but the feature is available in almost any BitTorrent client.

9. Start BitTorrent Downloads Over IM

Using IM applications like Pidgin or the Mac-only Adium, you can set up your IM client to automatically accept downloads from specific users (namely, you) and then save the file to a folder that your BitTorrent client watches for new torrent files (in Pidgin you'll need to go to Tools -> Plugins and enable the Autoaccept plugin). Most clients like uTorrent (Windows) and Transmission (*nix) support folder monitoring, so if your BitTorrent client is running it'll detect the file you've sent yourself and automatically start downloading the torrent. This method doesn't allow for very advanced remote management (like #5 below), but if all you want is a quick method for starting a new download, it's quick and easy.

8. Download BitTorrent in Your Browser

I'd always recommend using a dedicated BitTorrent client whenever you can, but sometimes installing or running another app just isn't an option. In those cases, web application BitLet is a perfect solution. It runs BitTorrent downloads through an applet directly in your web browser; all you have to do is point it to the torrent file. You can even stream music directly from a torrent in your browser with WeStream, BitLet's other in-browser BitTorrent tool. (Read more)

7. Manage Your Video Downloads with Miro

Cross platform, open source application Miro is designed as a one-stop shop for handling video—whether that's video podcasts or BitTorrent. It doesn't have all the tools available to less specialized clients like uTorrent or Transmission, but it does work well to automatically download a season's worth of television while it's happening. 6. Speed Up Your Downloads and Outwit Your Traffic-Shaping ISP
Whether you're new to BitTorrent or you're just not getting the download speeds you were hoping for, you can take steps to speed up your downloads by capping your upload speeds, adjust your connection allowances, or switch the default port. (Read more)

Sometimes a slow connection is the result of intentional BitTorrent throttling by your internet service provider. In addition to switching the default port your BitTorrent client is using, there are tons of other methods—like turning on encryption or adjusting the way your client behaves—that can help fool your ISP and speed up your downloads. 5. Remote Control Your BitTorrent Downloads with uTorrent's WebUI or Transmission's Clutch

You're gaga for BitTorrent, and these two tools let you control and manage all of your BitTorrent downloads from the comfort of your web browser—no matter where you are. Both applications can handle almost any feature of the desktop version (and both look very similar, as well). Just find the one that fits the operating system you're using and get started with your remote access. uTorrent even has a special web interface for the iPhone.

4. Set Up a TV Season Pass with Ted or TVShows

Whether you opt for Ted (all platforms) or TVShows (Mac OS X only), these apps ensure you'll no longer need to dig for the latest and greatest episodes of your favorite TV shows week after week. You just point them to what you like, and they automatically download new episode torrents as they become available.
3. Search the Best of the Best with YouTorrent
youtorrent.pngRather than get into an argument over the best torrent tracker/search engine, might I instead submit YouTorrent, a meta search engine that scours some of the best BitTorrent trackers for downloads and sorts the results by number of seeds. I know it's new, and who knows if it'll last (it doesn't even have ads yet), but—god willing—YouTorrent is currently the easiest place to look for a new, healthy torrent (barring some really good private tracker that most of us are not members of). transm1.png

2. Transmission

(Mac/Linux)

The go-to BitTorrent client for Mac users, Transmission has that Mac feel that makes you want to go out and pirate download some Creative Commons-licensed content. It's popped up already a lot in this list, from its torrent folder monitoring to it's snazzy remote control features, so if you're looking for a great client for your Mac, Transmission is the best on the market. 1. uTorrent

(Windows)

It's unfortunately Windows-only for now (that may change sometime this year), but uTorrent is bar-none the best BitTorrent client you'll find. It's fast, lightweight, and full-featured (as you've seen above). If there's one Windows application I miss when I'm working away from Windows, uTorrent is that client.

Metallica The Unforgiven II

image

Lay beside me, tell me what they've done
Speak the words I wanna hear, to make my demons run
The door is locked now, but it's open if you're true
If you can understand the me, than I can understand the you
Lay beside me, under wicked sky
The black of day, dark of night, we share this paralyze
The door cracks open, but there's no sun shining through
Black heart scarring darker still, but there's no sun shining through
No, there's no sun shining through
No, there's no sun shining...
What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you....
What I've felt, what I've known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there, 'cause I'm the one who waits for you
Or are you unforgiven too?
Lay beside me, this won't hurt I swear
She loves me not, she loves me still, but she'll never love again
She lay beside me, But she'll be there when I'm gone
Black heart scarring darker still, yes she'll be there when I'm gone
Yes, she'll be there when I'm gone
Dead sure she'll be there...
What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you....
What I've felt, what I've known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there, 'cause I'm the one who waits for you
Or are you unforgiven too?
Lay beside me, tell me what I've done
The door is closed, so are you're eyes
But now I see the sun, now I see the sun
Yes now I see it
What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you....
What I've felt, what I've known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there, 'cause I'm the one who waits,
The one who waits for you....
Oh what I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you.... (So I dub thee
unforgiven....)
Oh, what I've felt....
Oh, what I've known....
I take this key (never free...)
And I bury it (never me...) in you
Because you're unforgiven too....
Never free....
Never me....
'Cause you're unforgiven too....
Oh

5 Free SMS services

image A lot of us are still avid text messagers, not because we enjoy paying our carrier those tiring toll (or package) fees, but because it’s still one of the most reliable ways to get a text-based message to a cell phone user — not everyone has mobile IM clients or uses mobile email services.

Even web-based services are starting to recognize that, and recently there have been more and more companies launching “free” SMS options — most often free for those users who want to send a text to a cell phone via the web and email.

Sending free SMS from the Internet isn’t a new idea at all and companies have been developing the bridge between email and SMS for years. By now it’s a simple and easy service to set up and companies have started adding these services as a feature to bring in eyeballs.

Startups are also starting to get more creative with the business model (which was previously severely lacking) as well as the technology solution. At the same time they are learning to add privacy and best practices functions. Remember much of the time receiving the SMS message costs, and some of the services like free bulk messaging could have some not-so-nice spam potential.

1). TeleFlip: TeleFlip has always been a favorite way to send “free” texts via email: ‘phone number’@teleflip.com. They still offer that service which they now call FlipOut, but they are also trying to turn their technology into a working business. I haven’t been able to test the new service yet (shown at DEMO), which is supposed to be out sometime this month, but they say it forwards your emails to your SMS inbox for free — 5,000 messages for per month. Hopefully they have a good management tool, as email spam can fill an SMS inbox pretty quickly and receiving text fees still apply.

2). Peekamo: Founded just November 2006 and based in Toronto according to their web site, Peekamo says they are different than other web-based SMS free sites, as both the receiver and sender don’t pay for the message. How do they manage that? — they say ad-sponsored messages, and using a protocol called short message peer to peer, (unlike the more common email-SMS method). It is also available in India

3). Gizmo SMS: SIPphone has more than its fair share of sweet mobile services like the Gizmo Project, and earlier this month they also added a free web-based SMS service. The service works for dozens of countries and has a model ‘terms of service’ and privacy assurance sections. It’s not rocket science, but shows how these services are easy enough to create that they can be used to market the company’s other money-making solutions.

4). TxtDrop: TxtDrop founder 22-year-old Nate Kapitanski got some flack over his SMS MySpace widget and web service last year — the site didn’t launch with privacy terms and didn’t have an About section describing the company or its goals. He says the whole thing was a learning experience which helped make the site much better. As a result he added a privacy policy, email blocking, limited the number of messages that could be sent per minute, and says your phone number is now hidden in the MySpace code. Kapitanski, who only works on the project part time, also recently released a Mac OS dashboard SMS widget and says he is working on a Vista text gadget that could be out as early as April. There still isn’t a clear about section, but if you email the info address on the site, Kapitanski will probably oblige you on details you want to know.

5). 160by2 : 160by2 is a really cool webservice for sending sms in India for free. They earn by appending the message with an ad("kuch meetha ho jaye Winking") . And the delivery time is really good. I used to get instant sms when I send it to my number. Really worth a try.

Your carrier!? Yes, its true, some carriers have some limited web-to SMS and email to SMS services. On Verizon Wireless’ vtext.com site you can send a text to a Verizon wireless cell phone user, and send an SMS via email to “verizon wireless phone number”@vtext.com. Sprint has a similar web based service to text Sprint customers. They still get some money the more times people text using most solutions, so why not get more people to text their customers.

Chickipedia. For Guys That Never Get Laid.

I typically have no problem indulging in Break.com’s college humor for online videos, but a new site released by the company has me feeling otherwise. Chickipedia is pretty much everything you’d expect from a site with such a name. An online resource seething with useless information about women. Currently in beta, Chickipedia is enough to make any woman’s skin crawl. Think of it at a non-geeky take on Dig a Silicon Valley Girl, and just like Wikipedia, anyone can contribute to this online encyclopedia–for the guy that will never get laid.

chickipedia-edit.pngIn an effort to become an undefeated search engine on the millions of hot chicks out there, this wiki-style resource lets you add a woman, and edit existing entries about her. At the very least, I can say that Chickipedia has made the process very simple. The information you input is laid out exactly as it will show on the page, instructions for adding links and images appear on the right side of the page, and a search option for finding websites to auto-link content for the entry page will take away some of the effort pangs you’ll need in order to make your entry halfway useful to all the other duds out there (and you thought I’d be so deterred by the homepage that I wouldn’t actually test out the site). That’s right. Give it up for Chickipedia being smart enough to find a way for even the simpletons to create content that can be utilized for SEO purposes.

chickipedia-s.png

I’m not just ranting in feminist mode for the sake of it. The end result is a media-centric look at a given woman indexed in the site, which includes her hobbies, activities, nicknames, photos, videos, articles and buzz, which consists of the most recent links from across the web that concern your female of current interest. For networking and profile purposes, there are discussions, comments, an option to view incoming links for a given wiki entry, and the ability to follow your own content as well as watch other entries.

Now, there’s an actual reason why I don’t particularly like this site, and it’s primarily because of the overt concentration on a women’s physical attribute, and the slant on “hot chicks.” This includes displaying a woman’s measurements, which is used as the only recommendation tool on the site. Mmm hmm. You can find similar women based on the current chick’s body measurements. Seriously?

There’s a very tasteful way in which this site could have been done, and still attract all those Maxim readers. Team Sugar does a good job of providing information on celebrities without making it feel like E! Entertainment meets pre-pubescent boys that are scared of their own mothers. So any time you’re feeling insecure (and I mean you guys…not girls) about yourself, feel free to browse through Chickipedia. It won’t make you feel better. In case my review of Chickipedia didn’t really get the message across, here’s a video, a la Mac vs. PC, direct from Break.com’s vaults.

Eval function in JavaScript

Again I am writing some programming thing on this blog after a longtime.

Eval(eval()) function is an advanced function in javascript which may look silly and most people may overlook it, but it is a really a powerful thing that javascript provides.

We had a scenario where we have to pass the applet object dynamically so that we can manipulate its param.

document.appletName.getChartObject().getTitle());

where appletName is a variable which stores appletname. So we started banging our heads on that. First option was creating an array variable to store the applets. But that would be too complicated. Then I came across this function.

So we used

eval("document."+appletName+".getChartObject().getTitle()");

and tadaaaah...We got the desired result.

The eval() function evaluates a string and executes it as if it was script code. Cool na...

Configuring Windows Live Writer for Blogger

Step 1:
Delete your blog from WLW completely. Don't skip ahead, because it's a really dumb fix that you'll miss if you follow the instructions WLW provides.

Step 2: Add New Blog
Press Tools--> Add weblog account and follow the prompts:  (Names of Prompts are in Blue)

ADD NEW BLOG SCREEN: Choose the second option, titled "Another Blog Service" and press NEXT.

Step 3: Configure Writer to work with your current blog service.
Weblog URL: ENTER A FAKE ADDRESS THAT WILL NOT RESOLVE! I used "http://text" for mine.
Username: enter your blogger beta email address "username@gmail.com"
Password: enter your password.
Press NEXT

(The screen will now say "Analyzing Weblog Settings" which is actually the problem. If you give WLW the correct address, it's going to setup wrong. This way, we're going to trick it into thinking you have some strange custom blog that its not expecting)

Step 4:
Select Provider: Choose "Blogger (Atom)" from the list of available providers.
Remote posting URL for your weblog: This is already going to appear in the text box and it will look like this: "http://www.blogger.com/feeds/<feed-id>/posts/full"
Replace the <feed-id> with your own unique ID for your blog. This will be a number format and will look something like "1234567890123456"

If you did this, the link will now look like the one below:
http://www.blogger.com/feeds/1234567890123456/posts/full

Press NEXT

(DETECTING WEB SETTINGS: At this point, the WLW program is going to try to get your template code and do a few other things. It will probably fail.. that's ok. You can fix this in a minute.)

Step 5: Thank you for using Windows Live Writer
Enter a friendly name here for your blog: "My Blog" or whatever you want it to be.

Make sure the "Switch To This Weblog Now button" is checked.
Press Finish

DONE WITH THE TWEAKS... ONE MORE THING

Now, you SHOULD have a new blog post screen opened up before you, but you won't have your blog template yet most likely.... now we fix that.

Go to "Weblog --> Edit Weblog Accounts..."
Choose your blog, and press "Edit" on the right.
When the screen comes up, to edit your blog settings, DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING. Just press NEXT, until you get to the screen with the 'Update Style Template" button. Press this button and wait while the program detects your theme and downloads it to your computer.

Note: Mine gave me the "unable to delete test post" message, but that's ok too. You can do that manually from the blogger dashboard.

Once this is done, you should be able to press NEXT again.
Now, press Finish
Once you get back to your main screen, press "View --> Web Layout" and you should now be seeing your template view on your WLW screen.

Females Molested in Mumbai In New Year Trance

In an extremely shamefully patetic incident in Mumbai, a mob of 70-80 men groped and molested two young women for some 15 minutes on a busy main street in Mumbai's glamour district Juhu early on New Year's Day. This incident has questioned the need of sex education in India.

An identical incident had shamed India's safest city exactly a year ago — a girl was molested by New Year's eve revellers at the Gateway of India. That incident was captured on film by a popular Mumbai tabloid.

The women — one in a black dress, the other in a jeans and top — emerged from the JW Marriott with two male friends around 1.45 am, and began walking towards Juhu beach close by.

A mob of about 40 got after them and began teasing the women. One of the women swore loudly at the hooligans.

But the mob, now 70-80 strong, wouldn't let go. They trapped the women near a vehicle and a tree, and pounced on them. A man in a white shirt tore off the black dress. Another, in a blue shirt, led the assault.
As the women fell on the ground, dozens of men jumped on them.

Senior Inspector Amarjeet Singh rushed in swinging his cane and chased away the mob. He took the victims to the Juhu police station. However, no case was registered, Juhu police station in-charge Shivaji Tadlapurkar said.

According to the "honorable" Commissioner of Police, these sort of incidents happens everywhere, so that gives us an excuse to repeat these things. These is really amazing thing, I wish I could explain him the meaning of the statement that he had made.

I really want the guilties to be punished so that people have the fear of the punishment and such incidents won't happen again
